Just wanted to share one of our favorite videos with you. As we learn to count by fives, we have discovered that we can use groups of object to help us. This video shows us how to count by fives with monkeys and gives us a fun little song to help us remember the skip counting pattern. Also, the WOW word of the week at TPE was infer. To infer means to guess or conclude. In first grade, students can make inferences when reading to figuring out what an author or illustrator is trying to tell the reader without using words. This fun video below allows viewers to infer what is going on with a group of silly, and not so nice, birds. This video was just what our class needed to understand how to make an inference.
This past week we have been working on lots of new things here in Room 1. In math, we have worked on making numbers 0 through 8. We like to call these our "stories of...." For example, the story of 2 is: 0 and 2, 2 and 0, 1 and 1. These "stories of" tell us all the ways we can add to make a given number. We have also been working on our skip counting by tens and fives. In reading, we have focused on retelling. We use a hamburger and fries model to help us retell a story without forgetting any of the important fictional story elements. We also got a visit from the fire department! They put on an awesome play to teach us what to do in the event of a fire. Please refer to the activity book sent home to create a safe escape route for your family in the event of a fire. Have conversations about who to call, where to go, and checking your smoke alarms to help prevent dangerous situations from occurring in your home. |
