Each night students are expected to do math, spelling, and reading homework. You can find these assignments in your child's homework binder. Ms. Brown and I will check to make sure homework is being completed each night, however, it will not be collected and reviewed until FRIDAY. It is extremely important for your child to get this extra practice at home, for we have a spelling test and an informal math assessment each Friday.
Reading Logs-- your child's reading log can be found in a page protector inside their homework binder. This is to be signed by a parent or guardian each night, affirming that your child has read for at least fifteen minutes. Please note that it is acceptable for you to read to your child if he/she needs help or if you feel the book they brought home is too advanced for them.

Parents, here are some helpful hints to help guide your child's reading at home.
1. Spend at least 15 minutes each night letting your child read TO you. 2. Read a book TO your child at least several times a week. 3. Have your child read the text at least 2 times to you out loud. This will help with reading fluency (the speed and smoothness in which your child reads). 4. Ask your child questions about what he/she read. 5. Allow your child to write or draw a picture about what he/she read. 6. Encourage your child! Tell them what a great job he/she is doing! |
Want to improve your child's reading? Try making SIGHT WORD flashcards. Defined as high frequency words, these words are seen and used daily in kindergarten through third grade text. Repeated practice of these sight words will improve your child's fluency and accuracy in reading. We suggest you do a "sight word sandwich" with flashcards: 80 % of words the know and 20% of words they don't. Please contact me if you would like more information about this activity, or need another copy of your child's sight word assessment!
