This past week we have been working on lots of new things here in Room 1. In math, we have worked on making numbers 0 through 8. We like to call these our "stories of...." For example, the story of 2 is: 0 and 2, 2 and 0, 1 and 1. These "stories of" tell us all the ways we can add to make a given number. We have also been working on our skip counting by tens and fives. In reading, we have focused on retelling. We use a hamburger and fries model to help us retell a story without forgetting any of the important fictional story elements. We also got a visit from the fire department! They put on an awesome play to teach us what to do in the event of a fire. Please refer to the activity book sent home to create a safe escape route for your family in the event of a fire. Have conversations about who to call, where to go, and checking your smoke alarms to help prevent dangerous situations from occurring in your home.

The season is definitely changing and so are our students! We have learned so much since the beginning of school that I can hardly believ. This past week we had lots of fun learning about John Chapman or "Johnny Appleseed" and how he contributed to our country with his delicious apples. We also got to meet the mayor and city manager of New Bern. We learned all about how they help the people in our community. Hello everyone! We had an awesome time at open house last night! I got to see and meet lots of new faces and you all look so ready to start first grade...that makes me really happy. I am so excited to begin the year with you and see what great things are in store for us! Make sure you get lots of rest this weekend because Monday we will get started right away. Be ready to work hard AND have fun. :) See ya' bright and early!
Parents, I am posting the supply list for those of you who may not have received one or just in case you think you may have forgotten something! This is a fun and meaningful activity that can easily been done at home to help your child practice his/her weekly spelling words. Don't be afraid to get messy! It's official..the holiday season is here and we are in full gear to celebrate! We have had an exciting week so far with the addition of a beautiful Christmas tree, the Grinch, and the arrival of our Elf Buddy. Buddy will be with us until Christmas, reporting back to Santa each night on student behavior and performance. He also keeps up with the Grinch who is growing his heart with our help. Each time someone shows an act of kindness we write it down on a heart and pin it to the Grinch. We want everyone to be full of love and kiThe students have loved seeing where Buddy will end up each morning, for he is a sneaky little thing! Hey Y'all! Sorry it has been so long since my last post. I guess it's true, time flies when you are having fun! We have been hard at work in class, learning about informative texts, graphs, word problems, and magnets. It has been challenging, but we see growth and success each and every day! Here are some recent picture of us in action... Our field trip to the Strike Zone was an absolute blast! We had several students who were able to score at or above 100! The students had lots of fun and could easily identify the use of a push or pull. It is safe to say they fully understand the concept of force being used to move an object. We have another field trip coming up on the 11th of October to see a play in downtown New Bern. If you are interested in coming, please make a note on your child's permission slip or give me a call. We would love to have you! Hope you all are enjoying this BEAUTIFUL weekend. I have had lots of fun going to sporting events, attending our staff picnic, and relaxing in this fall weather. Take advantage of the last day of your weekend... Sunday Fun-day Y'all! I wanted to say thank you all for returning the field trip forms and money. We can not wait to go to Strike Zone on the 26th to see how our study of force and motion applies in real life situations. Don't forget, picture day if this Thursday, September 19th! I am sure the students will all look as cute as ever :)
I have been having some questions about school supplies that were sent in and why they aren't coming home each night. Please understand that theses supplies are for school. Most things must remain in our classroom so that they are their for your child to use when they are needed. If I send students home with scissors, glue, notebooks, and so forth it is likely they will be forgotten at home at some point. Well, then we can not do our work which would be tragic. But, be assured that the products you sent in are being used your by child. Composition books are used as journals, the binder serves as a writing portfolio, and folders hold work done during or small group sessions. Hopefully this clears up any lingering questions. |
